Winter Workout: 8 Dressing Rules For Outdoor Exercise

1.Dress in layers over layers

Although it is important to keep warm during winter workouts, it doesn't mean wearing just one thick clothing, but multiple layers. The multi-layer technique allows sweat and moisture to be carried away from the skin, allowing water vapour to escape from the outside; if you feel your body heating up and sweating during a workout, you can gradually remove layers to avoid letting your body get injured in a flash of cold temperatures.

2.Choose long sleeves

Long sleeves are a necessity for outdoor workouts in winter.
You can buy compression tops with crew necks and long sleeves to protect your upper body. These are usually made of breathable material so you don't have to worry about suffocating when your body starts to heat up.

3.Choose breathable, sweat-absorbing materials

Even in winter, you sweat, but because you wear more clothes than in summer, it doesn't evaporate as easily. You need to wear a thin layer of synthetic material, such as polypropylene. This material will wick sweat away from your body so that you can be more comfortable during your workout.

4.Wear shoes with rubber soles

To prevent falls, it is recommended that you do not wear leather shoes or shoes with hard plastic soles, but preferably sports shoes with deep horizontal stripes and rubber soles.

5.Wear bright colours or clothing with reflective features

In winter, the darker nights become longer, which means you have more opportunities to exercise during the darker hours of the day. So wearing reflective clothing when you are out exercising in the early morning or late evening will help others to notice you. It also makes drivers aware of you when you are running or cycling outdoors, reducing the chances of accidents.

6.Keep your limb terminals warm

In cold weather, blood flow in the body can be diverted, concentrating it in the core of the body and making the hands and feet vulnerable to frostbite; below zero degrees Celsius, a lot of heat can also be lost from the head. Therefore, it is important to wear warm equipment such as gloves, hats and long socks when exercising outdoors in winter and rub your hands together from time to time to help your body retain heat.

7.Wear rubber-soled shoes

To prevent falls, don't wear leather shoes or shoes with hard plastic soles; wear rubber-soled sports shoes with deep horizontal stripes.

8.Pack dry clothes

As your body loses heat quickly in winter, return to the room as soon as possible after a relaxing workout, dry off, change into dry clothes and put on a jacket to keep you warm in case your body temperature drops quickly.
